Dear Fellow SAC member, et al.:
We will be hold the MegaCam preship review this week and
MMIRS has had successful first light at the MMT,
so it seems likely that we will be calling for
proposals to use these instruments scientifically in 2010a.
I think it would be useful, to guide Ian and Scott, to have a 1 - 1 1/2
hour telecon to discuss the looming situation, specifically.
- When will we schedule the f/5 run?
- How long will it be?
- Are we planning to ship the f/5 instruments back after
the 2010a run or should we be planning for a 2010b run?
I had the inspiration to require potential proposers to submit
a "pre-proposal" by 1 Sept to gauge interest and make our best
assessment as to when people want f/5 on the telescope. Submitting
a pre-proposal would be a prerequisite for actually requesting time
in 2010a. This would be a once-only requirement.
Note, Brian McLeod is an invitee, since he has some stake in this
dialogue.
Since the PFS preship review is the first week in August, it would
be useful for Shec or Jeff to briefly brief the SAC on what their schedule
looks like.
I would propose to schedule a SAC telecon some time in Oct to review
the MegaCam engineering run and discuss PFS protocol.
